CHAPTER 10

Assyria and The Assyrian

NOTE:

This chapter has been altered by word changes in versions later than the King James or Geneva Bible.  The edits made in those versions have altered the meaning of this passage of Isaiah and totally eliminated the subject related to the End Times. Therefore this passage will not be reviewed accurately by any commentator using any version published after the King James version.

Isaiah Chapter 10 verse 1-4

Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed; To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!

And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?

Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

Some of the sins that they are guilty of.  Even still His Hand is stretched out waiting for them to grasp.

Isaiah Chapter 10 verse 5-11

O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.  I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

For he saith, Are not my princes altogether kings?  Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?

As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria; Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

Assyria as we have already been told, will be God’s instrument in His punishment of the Jews.

Isaiah chapter 17 details more related to Assyria defeat of Damascus.

However, the king of Assyria does not believe he is a “tool” for God.  He becomes proud of his accomplishments and his ability.

Isaiah Chapter 10 verse 12-19

Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.

For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man:

And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.

Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;

And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and they shall be as when a standardbearer fainteth.

And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.

God will turn around and bring justice back upon Assyria for going beyond what God had desired of him.

END TIMES PROPHECY

Last Days references in verse 20-34

As found in the King James version

See the study notes on the End Times for additional references.

This relates to the End Times because of the Details and references.  There is also the recognition of whom the writer is talking about.

In these previous chapters, Isaiah has been specific regarding who he is referring to.

Example:

Judah = Nation of Judah;

Epharim = Nation of Israel (10 tribes when divided kingdom)

Isaiah is now going to refer to “the House of Jacob”.  He has done this previously in earlier chapters.  This can only be true if ALL the tribes are included.  His people are “dwelling in Zion” not in captivity.

“The Assyrian” = is a reference to the “Anti-christ” of the End Times.

This term for the Anti-christ is also used by the Prophet Micah in his writings in Micah 5:5.

Isaiah Chapter 10 verse 20-21

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.

“…in that day…” = the Last Days

“…house of Jacob…” = the entire 12 tribes

Hallelujah, finally!  At that point the Jews will FINALLY quit following the evil AND WILL follow God.

Isaiah Chapter 10 verse 22-23

For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.

For the Lord GOD of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land.

“consumption” – Hebrew word: “killoyown” – to end, cease, finish

Some places translated “the consummation” or “the full end”

This will be the end of the centuries of having to deal with the sin and rebellion of the Hebrew children.  It is finally over once and for all.

(This again is another reason this passage is dealing with the future status of the Jews and not Isaiah’s time or any other.  This has not happened as of the writing of this document)

Isaiah Chapter 10 verse 24-25

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.

For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall cease, and mine anger in their destruction.

Do not be afraid of the Assyrian/Anti-christ. His power is limited. His time is limited.  He will treat them with a “rod” of misery that rivals what the Pharoah did when they were slaves in Egypt at time of Moses.

This must be endured for a little while and then that man (the Anti-christ) WILL see God’s anger displayed when He personally returns at the Second Coming to deal with him.

Isaiah Chapter 10 verse 26-27

And the LORD of hosts shall stir up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod was upon the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt.

And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.

The Lord will scourge the Anti-christ in the same way as Gideon took care of the Midianites (Judges 7)

Also, in the manner that His rod (Moses’ staff) was raised to part the Red Sea and then destroyed the Egyptians.

This burden of suffering will be removed by the Anointed One: Messiah at the Second Coming.

Isaiah Chapter 10 verse 28-32

He is come to Aiath, he is passed to Migron; at Michmash he hath laid up his carriages:

They are gone over the passage: they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled.

Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim: cause it to be heard unto Laish, O poor Anathoth. Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee.

As yet shall he remain at Nob that day: he shall shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

“carriages” = old term for luggage or supplies, as in military conflict would call “supply lines”

Actual military movements of the Anti-christ!  Daniel gave us hundreds of years of world history that has occurred but did not happen until after his lifetime.  Why not prophecy related to military conquest of the Anti-christ?

Verse 32 details the apparent “HQ” for the Anti-christ conquest of Jerusalem!

Isaiah Chapter 10 verse 33-34

Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror: and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled.

And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.

The armies of the Anti-christ will contain all the nations of the world gathered to fight the enemies of their leader.  As dense and deep as a thicket of woods they WILL be cut down by God.
