Second Coming of Christ
Compiled by WD Kemner January 2025
The “Second Coming” is a term referring to the point in time when Jesus Christ will return as He promised. Matthew 24; Mark 13; Luke 21:20-28 are parallel passages to one another. They were all written by the men who heard the discourse by Jesus after he had been asked about the end days. Jesus talks about the conditions that will exist before His Return and then gives full details of His Coming Back. Who would know the most about His coming back than the man Himself.
Man was given details of the Second Coming centuries before the First Coming of Messiah in Bethlehem. The prophet Joel used the phrase “The Day of the Lord” in Joel 2 to reference the event. This same term is used by many other writers in the Bible. The Apostle John talks about it in Revelation 19.
The events of this day will get the world’s attention and will all happen in a single literal “DAY”. Isaiah 10:17; Zechariah 3:8-10; Zechariah 14:6-7. It will be a day that will fulfill God’s promises to His chosen people Israel. He has been patient with them and now it is time for the end. This can be seen in the writings of Isaiah and many other passages. Many of the prophets like Zechariah summarized that day.
God warned the nations ahead of time that His children were being sent into captivity for their sins. Those nations would be judged for their treatment of the Jews. He also told those nations that He (God) would be returning (first advent not even happened yet) and IF they had learned from their captive Jews to follow God then their nation would not be destroyed and they would be “grafted” into God’s family! Jeremiah 12:14-17
How Soon Before that Day Arrives?
Song for the Second Coming. Isaiah 24
Celebration of the Second Coming. Isaiah 25
The Lord has “waited” and been patient. Isaiah 30:18-22
“…he shall cry, yea, roar;…I have long time holden my peace; I have been still and refrained myself: now will I cry…” Isaiah 42:13-15
This is a day known ONLY to the Lord. Zechariah 14:7
Jesus was the “ensign” when he was lifted up upon the cross. Jesus is the one to “blow a trumpet” at His return!
God is taking a rest (period of time) to consider and look at the harvest that SHOULD be taking place.
His armies are prepared coming from all over heaven for battle.
They have the weapons of His indignation to destroy the earth. Isaiah 13:3-6
When He comes “…it shall be at an instant suddenly.” Isaiah 29:5
All of Israel will not have been “evangelized” for Jesus BEFORE Jesus returns a SECOND TIME. Jesus was talking to his disciples when he said this. It was not evangelized prior to Jerusalem being destroyed In 70 A.D. Matthew 10:23
His coming will be sudden as a thief in the night. 1 Thessalonians 5:1-8
Paul concludes each chapter of First Thessalonians with a reminder of the return of Christ.
Signs of HIS Return
There are events that will occur PRIOR to the Second Coming.
The Antichrist must be revealed and proclaim himself God within the Jewish temple. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12
Jesus gave us the description of what will be occurring at the time of His return in Matthew 24:29-31.
There will be plenty of signs in the sky to alert the entire planet that something is happening!
The sun moon and stars will also announce His arrival. This will be occurring after the last of the Seals and Trumpets of John’s Revelation have occurred which saw stars falling and darkness.
“And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.” Joel 2:30-31
There will be NOISE! Thunderings, earthquakes and “…flame of devouring fire.” Isaiah 29:6
IT WILL BE DARK according to the account in Matthew’s Gospel writing.
“For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.” Isaiah 13:10
“…sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in clear day.” Amos 8:9
“A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.” Joel 2:2
Man will attempt to but will not be able to hide from God. Isaiah 2:10-22
THE RETURN
“For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.”
Matthew 16:27 (Parallel Passages: Mark 8:38-9:1; Luke 9:26-27)
The Second Coming will include the saints from the Rapture and the Angels from Heaven.
“And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:” 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8
“…the Lord comes with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all…” Jude 14-15
“Behold he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him, and they also that pierced him.” Revelation 1:7
“And the LORD shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord GOD shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.” Zechariah 9:14
“…behold, the LORD cometh forth out of his place, and will come down, and tread upon the high places of the earth. And the mountains shall be molten under him, and the valleys shall be cleft, as wax before the fire, and as the waters that are poured down a steep place.” Micah 1:2-4
“And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south...” Zechariah 14:4-5
THE DAY CONTINUES…
The return of Jesus Christ will usher in what prophets like Joel refer to as the “Day of the Lord”. Jesus will be at the forefront leading His armies and before that day is done the Earth will be cleansed.
