Judgments on Nations

Throughout the reading of the books of the Prophets there are many descriptions of the judgments that the surrounding nations were to receive from the hand of God. These judgments due to the lack of support that was given to the Jewish people at some point in time.
It is often difficult to remember which Prophet wrote in regard to particular judgments. These pages are intended as a collection of those passages. Not all passages may have been collected. Some judgments may have been already carried out; while others are reserved for a future time.
Nation of Israel and specific individuals have entire books in scripture and will not be discussed here.

And he said, The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.
The first chapter of Amos will proceed to list judgments upon specific nations. These passages will be listed within the verses collected for each of those nations.
All it will take is for Him to raise His voice and they WILL come running.
SPECIFIC EVENT in Scripture called:
JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS
Joel 3:1-14
Will be held in Valley of Jehoshaphat after the restoration of Israel.
Judgment of ALL nations of the world for their treatment of God’s children Israel.
Joel 3:1-2
For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,
I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.
In THAT DAY when the Jews are back in their land AGAIN.
Again, refers to the Second time. They were brought back once before, out of Babylon with Ezra and Nehemiah.
He will then bring the nations of the world into the:
“Valley of Jehoshaphat”
Only mentioned here in Joel. It was debated for centuries why it was used. The term eventually came to represent the valley between Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives. Early Muslims and Christians both, believing it to be the location of the resurrection and judgment, turned it into an important location for burial sites. Concern and debate raged regarding how it was going to be possible to get every human who ever lived to be able to fit into that valley!
The term may also have come from Joel remembering the scene of military victory King Jehoshaphat had over his enemies. 2Chronicles 20:20-26.
Man always attempts to make everything fit his understanding. Simply put, the word “Jehoshaphat” means “Jehovah-judged”.
The simple truth of this passage is that All Nations will be brought before God for judgment for what they have done to His people.
Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong. Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.
Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.
Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
Jewish Captivity under Babylon
This is what is often considered the first “Captivity” of the Jewish Nation. The Jews were living in a divided kingdom. The Northern Kingdom was taken into Captivity and then the Southern Kingdom decades later was taken by Babylon. Nations surrounding the Jews were warned that they were included in this captivity.
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Because ye have not heard my words, Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the LORD, and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations. Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the candle. And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.
And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations. For many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of them also: and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their own hands.
Jeremiah 25:15-26
For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them. Then took I the cup at the LORD'S hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me:
To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day;
Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people; And all the mingled people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod, Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon, And all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon, and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea, Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the utmost corners, And all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mingled people that dwell in the desert, And all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes, And all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them.
The LIST OF NATIONS going to be taken by Babylonians to spend captivity as punishment from God.
Jeremiah 25:27-29
Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you. And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink. For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.
God says: If I will do this to my own city, why should the other nations not also receive their punishment due.
The Aftermath of the coming Day of the Lord
Obadiah 1:15-18
For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head. For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.
But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.

Arabia
KEDAR and KINGDOM OF HAZOR
Located near the Euphrates and Persian Gulf. Wealthy and living only in tents believed their wealth would protect them or buy themselves out of troubles.
Arabia = country south of Syria and Jordan. North of Red Sea and east of Canaan. Mentioned in 1 Kings 10:15
Dedanim = descendants of Dedan, son of Abraham and Keturah.
Tema and Kedar = descendants of Ishmael (son of Abraham and Hagar).
Isaiah 21:13-17
The burden upon Arabia. In the forest in Arabia shall ye lodge, O ye travelling companies of Dedanim. The inhabitants of the land of Tema brought water to him that was thirsty, they prevented with their bread him that fled. For they fled from the swords, from the drawn sword, and from the bent bow, and from the grievousness of war.
For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according to the years of an hireling, and all the glory of Kedar shall fail: And the residue of the number of archers, the mighty men of the children of Kedar, shall be diminished: for the LORD God of Israel hath spoken it.
“traveling companies” = caravans or roving tribes of Arabs.
Jeremiah 49:28-33
Concerning Kedar, and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon shall smite, thus saith the LORD; Arise ye, go up to Kedar, and spoil the men of the east. Their tents and their flocks shall they take away: they shall take to themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall cry unto them, Fear is on every side.
Flee, get you far off, dwell deep, O ye inhabitants of Hazor, saith the LORD; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath taken counsel against you, and hath conceived a purpose against you. Arise, get you up unto the wealthy nation, that dwelleth without care, saith the LORD, which have neither gates nor bars, which dwell alone. And their camels shall be a booty, and the multitude of their cattle a spoil: and I will scatter into all winds them that are in the utmost corners; and I will bring their calamity from all sides thereof, saith the LORD.
And Hazor shall be a dwelling for dragons, and a desolation for ever: there shall no man abide there, nor any son of man dwell in it.
KINGDOM OF ELAM
East of the Tigris River.
Jeremiah 49:34-39
The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against Elam in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might. And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.
For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them: And I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, saith the LORD. But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, saith the LORD.
This prophecy on Elam was received eleven years before the fall of Jerusalem. This is near the end of Jeremiah’s writings and therefore may have been added on to the end here (by someone) so that it was with the other nation prophecies. There is nothing to indicate when the previous prophecies were received.
“…four winds…” = four directions of the compass
“…my throne…” – throne of Nebuchadnezzar who in this case is doing the will of God in punishing the nations.
He states that Elam will once again exist in the End Times.
Zechariah 1:18-21
Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and behold four horns. And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem. And the LORD shewed me four carpenters. Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.
Those that caused Judah to be scattered will now have the same done to them.
“come to fray” – to shudder with terror, to scare with fear.
Land beyond rivers of Ethiopia.
Isaiah 18:1-2
Woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia: That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled!
Commentators have called the “Ethiopia” in this verse as symbolic for just about every modern day nation. Some have stated it is the nation of Ethiopia. Keeping scripture simple and direct; the passage says “…beyond the rivers of…”.
Ethiopia of current day, was named that after World War 2. The area of “ancient” Ethiopia was south of Egypt and at times went from the Nile River to the Red Sea to the Gulf. Large expanse with many things related to “rivers”.
Anyone on the other side of the Nile in those times would have used boats deployed upon the river to send “Ambassadors” to a nation that has:
- Been scattered
- Been meted out and trodden
- Land that is the best in the world, plush from the spoiling of rivers for centuries.
Descriptive of only one place. Land of “milk and honey”.

Isaiah 19:23-25

In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians. In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land: Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.
