CLASSIC AUTHORS

and seldom heard writings

There are Bible teachers and preachers of decades past that are household names and their sermons are often quoted. There are others who left their mark due to their diligence in the study of God’s Word. They are no longer with us but their research writings are.

Many of these are awesome materials for referencing in sermons and Biblical Studies. The works that benefit the study of God's Word without attempting to INTERPRET the Bible will be included on this page. This WILL ONLY include EXCERPTS to these works that are in the "public domain" and will have links to the complete works that are prominently available elsewhere for those that are interested in further reading of that authors work.

an image of the original manuscript

Written in the 1400's; this work is now over 600 years old!

The words speak directly to the very principles of God's word.

The work was originally in Latin and has been translated to English.

There are many copies of the complete work on the Internet.

One such location is: https://www.ccel.org/ccel/kempis/imitation.html

If interested in more history of these works read the introduction

that accompanies the "Imitation of Christ".  There is a background wiki at:

Two excerpts (PDF) have been created from two of the four books

included in the "Imitation of Christ" and they are included on this page.

The other two books are written as dialogs between a disciple and the Lord.

John Hartley  (1833)

"Researches in Greece and the Levant"

Excerpt (pages 307-308) from the Journal of Missionary John Hartley.

Missionary John Hartley kept a journal of lessons learned and of the people he met.

His entry for March 5, 1828 was an encounter with a shepherd in Europe and its application to John 10:3-5 which states:

"...the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out...and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow..."

Here is an excerpt (PDF format) from that journal.

William Booth (1829-1912)

A Vision of the Lost

William Booth was English Methodist Preacher founded the “Red Cross” in 1865.  He preached eternal punishment was coming for those that did not accept the Gospel of Jesus and forgiveness of sin.  “A vision of Lost Souls” is a pure statement of humanity’s need for the Salvation of Jesus.  Outside of the Bible, it is as important to the foundation of Christian lititure as any other writing.

Articles of War 1882

Used as the founding doctrine of The Salvation Army. These core beliefs need to be a standard.
