HISTORICAL CHRONOLOGY

of the Jewish Nation as it relates to Prophets

UNITED KINGDOM of Israel - 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 Kings 1-11, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles 1-9

When the tribes were brought together under the rule of a king, they remained a United Kingdom a relatively short time. When Saul was removed by God, David was anointed and the throne would then continue through his descendants. His son Solomon reigned and made the nation known the world over.

DIVIDED KINGDOM after Israel split into two -1 Kings 12 through 2 Kings 25; 2 Chronicles 10-36

Upon the death of Solomon the nation was divided into two kingdoms. Ten tribes to the north formed the nation of Israel with Samaria its capital.  The remaining tribes kept Jerusalem as capital and became known as nation of Judah.

Kingdom of Israel

Never had a godly king. They were so bad spiritually, giving in to idol worship and sin.  The prophets God used in an attempt to bring them back included: Elijah, Elisha, Amos, Hosea.  They would never listen and were given as captives to the Assyrians.

Kingdom of Judah

Had some Godly kings, including some that went back and forth in their following God. It lasted about 125 years longer than Israel did. Eventually being taken captives to Babylon and having Jerusalem ransacked and the temple destroyed.  Prophets included: Joel, Isaiah, Micah, Zephaniah, Jeremiah, Habakkuk,

Babylonian Captivity

Saw the work of prophets Daniel and Ezekiel

Restoration of the Remnant to the land

Saw the work of prophets Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi

Other Nations - God continued to create a witness among other nations

Obadiah – to the nation of Edom

Jonah and Nahum – both to Ninevah; Nahum was about 100 years after Jonah
