Chapter 11 and 12

God’s History of dealing with the entire Israel people

Hosea 11:1

Cross Reference:  Prophecy of Christ child

1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

Fulfilled prophecy. Quoted in Matthew 2:13.  Child Jesus leaving Egypt after going there for protection

Hosea 11:2-7

2 As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.

3 I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them.

4 I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them.

5 He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.

6 And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels.

7 And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.

The people are set in their minds that they should go to Egypt where they think they would be safe and life would be great. Turning their backs on God, they will Instead see God use the Assyrians to put them into captivity.

Hosea 11:8-11

8 How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.

9 I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city.

10 They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.

11 They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria: and I will place them in their houses, saith the LORD.

God is still compassionate about Ephraim, not wanting to destroy them.

Hosea 11:12

12 Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.

Judah will be given a little more time to turn things around. It would occur 133 years later 2Kings 17.

Hosea 12:1

1 Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.

Ephraim was sending oil into Egypt attempting to buy the Egyptians support against the Assyrians.

God will also deal with the Kingdom of Judah.

Hosea 12:2-5

2 The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.

3 He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God:

4 Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Beth-el, and there he spake with us;

5 Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD is his memorial.

Genesis 25:26 – birth of Jacob

Genesis 32: 24-32 – wrestle with God

Hosea 12:6-11

6 Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.

7  He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress.

8 And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.

9 And I that am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.

10 I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.

11 Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.

Hosea 12:12

12 And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.

Genesis 28-30

Hosea 12:13

13 And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.

The Exodus – Moses was a Prophet that led them out.

Deuteronomy 18:15-19, Moses is told that another prophet (Jesus) would be coming to “preserve” the nation.

Hosea 12:14

14 Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him.

Ephraim has the designation of being the worst of the two kingdoms.
