INTRODUCTION TO THE GOSPELS

There are four books of the Bible that are referred to as The Gospels.  The Gospels are written as eye-witness accounts of events during the lifetime of Jesus on earth.

There are two lineages recorded in scripture. Matthew 1 and also in Luke 3:23-38. Both lineages trace the ancestry of Jesus back to King David.

Matthew records the lineage back through Joseph (son of David) back to Solomon. This is the “Royal” line and thus a right to the throne of David.

Luke records the lineage back through Mary (seed of the woman) back to Nathan (2nd son of David). This is the Natural line.

PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY

There are books out there that attempt to do a chronological order to the events of the Bible.  This was not the purpose of this study.  The ONLY person that could do so, is Jesus Himself.  Instead of attempting to do four individual studies on each Gospel, it made more sense to “mesh” them together. The events are placed in order that appear reasonable.  This done with the knowledge that a DEEP, Archealogical, Theological study was not going to be done to decide which events happened before one another. Events were placed by what appears to be logical but keeping similar themes together was also done. The IMPORTANT FACTOR was to be able to study the Gospels and see it from the perspective of these four men.

Notes on MATTHEW

Written by Matthew Levi.  Matthew disappears from record following the listing in Acts.

It was written prior to 70 AD when Jerusalem was destroyed.  As Matthew lists the prophecy in chapter 24 of it’s fall and there is no follow-up to acknowledge the fulfillment of that prophecy has might be expected.

Matthew writes from the perspective of: “Jesus is a King”.  It was written and directed at the Jews. He writes in a style of a man wanting to be accurate and get ALL details of a specific discussion of Jesus.  He was not concerned about documenting items that might be considered offensive or ground breaking.  He was a tax collector and unliked by his own people and now this Jesus had called him! He was going to get every word possible.

The Gospel of Matthew can be broken down into five sections recounting the life of Jesus:

Chapters 1-7     Birth to public ministry

Chapters 8-12   Miracles

Chapters 13-17 Parables

Chapters 18-23 Ministry move from Galilee to Judea

Chapters 24-25 Time in Jerusalem

Notes on MARK

Author: John Mark

Colossians 4:10 - Nephew of Barnabas

Acts 12:12 – “And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.”

Taken with Paul and Barnabas on their first Missionary Trip.  He however left the trip to return home. On their second trip Paul and Barnabas splitup over whether to take Mark. He would end up later working for Paul and becoming instrumental in distributing Paul’s letters.

Theme:  Jesus as the Servant.  Many attributes of Jesus that display his servant attitude are interwoven throughout the book and are always the focus of Mark. His writing could be considered to be the “safest”, in that he does not go out of style to record “controversial” statements by Jesus. Statements that offended the “establishment” of the synagogue.  This is probably the reason most religious organizations today will stay with teaching from Mark.

Notes on LUKE

Often called “The Physician”. Wrote the Book of Acts or at least portions of it.  His gospel writings are written in the style of a medical professional today writing his medical report on a patient. The beginning is smooth as in writing previous history.  As the middle of the book approaches Luke tends to “remember” something Jesus said. He then stops for a moment to record that thought and then gets back to writing from where he was.

Notes on JOHN

The “Beloved”. Brother of James (Matthew 4:21)

Wrote the Gospel, I, II, III John, and Revelation

John writes as if this is the most Holy of information a person would ever write.  He is correct. He therefore takes time to explain things but does so without adding all the stories that might appear to be “unimportant” in expounding on the Holiness  of God.  Of all the writers, he would be the “natural” pick to receive the Revelation.
