Chapter 10

Daniel’s Fourth Vision - Part 1

NOTE: The last three chapters (10,11,12) should never have been separated. They were separated for clarity; however, the vision and conversations contained in the three chapters are all a part of the same event that Daniel is experiencing.

Daniel Chapter 10 verse 1

In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long: and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision.

See the Word Study on Cyrus, King of Persia

“…a thing was revealed unto Daniel….but the time appointed was long…”

What was revealed to Daniel would occur in a far distant future to Daniel.

Daniel Chapter 10 verses 2-3

In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.

Daniel was on a three week fast.  The fast was not a diet. To be on such a fast, his body was experiencing the effects. However, the soul was in a place for a spiritual breakthrough.

Daniel Chapter 10 verses 3-4

And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel;

April 24th of the calendar.  It is interesting for Daniel to have noted the date, yet it is not a surprise considering the major event that had just occurred in his life (the fast) and now the vision he would see.

Daniel has a Vision of the Messiah

Daniel Chapter 10 verses 5-6

Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.

He describes what can only be visions of the Messiah. The imagery is much the same as the manner in which both Ezekiel and John in Revelation describes Him.

Daniel Chapter 10 verse 7

And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves.

Similar to Paul on the road to Damascus. The men around Daniel ran in freight at what was happening but they could not see what Daniel saw.

Daniel Chapter 10 verses 8-9

Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground.

Daniel who is probably nearing 90-100 years of age is now void of any physical stamina.

The Archangel Gabriel returns

Daniel Chapter 10 verses 10-11

And, behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands. And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling.

Gabriel now is present and speaking.  We get a glimpse into the workings of the spirit realm.

Daniel Chapter 10 verses 12-13

Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

Daniel is at least 80 years old; some have listed him as being from 90-100 at the time of his fourth vision. He spends 21 days in a fast from bread, flesh and wine. He is seeking understanding and a spiritual break through. He is void of all strength when it finally comes.

The Archangel Gabriel responds that “…from the FIRST Day that you set your heart to understand…thy words were heard.”  And “...but the prince of the kingdom of Persia (Satan’s angels) withstood me 21 days…”

Gabriel was responding to Daniel’s need and it took him 21 days to do so because of the battle going on in the spirit realm!  This part of the story we may have often heard.

But do we often consider what would have happened if Daniel had not continued for the full 21 days?

What if Daniel had decided after seven days (week) that he had given enough time? How about after two weeks of prayer and fasting? No, he kept on and on for 21 days UNTIL there was the BREAK THROUGH!  What happens in those battles in the spirit realm if NO ONE is praying?

Daniel Chapter 10 verses 14-19

Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days.

And when he had spoken such words unto me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumb. And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me,

O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength. For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me.

Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me, And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.

Gabriel is now here to tell Daniel what will happen to Israel in the latter days.  Daniel is so physically weak.  He is physically restored twice in these verses by someone.  Appears to definitely be other than Gabriel and similar to one earlier in chapter

Daniel Chapter 10 verses 20-21

Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.

But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.

Gabriel will have to return (after he is done with Daniel) to his conflict with the prince of Persia. Gabriel KNOWS that another satanic angel the prince of Grecia is on his way.

He will first show Daniel what he needs to know first.  There is no one that is helping Gabriel in his warfare except Michael, Daniel’s archangel.
